I truly believe sport is one of the most powerful platforms to promote gender equality and empower women and girls. The rise of women in sport is perhaps one of the greatest opportunities to redefine femininity and equality through powerful role models with diverse portrayals of what being a women or girl is. Participation in sport at any level, from grassroots to high performance, contributes to healthy and active living. This is the time to shape the women’s sport agenda in Malaysia to realise the health, commercial and societal benefits of increasing female engagement – as participants, fans, role models and decision makers.Equity leads to Equality
The United Nations recognises sport as one of the great drivers of gender equality which is an important enabler towards achieving its 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Equitable opportunity to participate and be involved in sport should be the right of every woman and girl regardless of background or ability. Despite the progress made towards achieving gender equality in sports, female athletes in Malaysia still face numerous obstacles. Discrimination based on the real or perceived sexual orientation and gender identity of female athletes persists. Through sports, girls learn important life skills such as teamwork, leadership and confidence, however, girls are dropping out of sports at twice the rate of boys by age 14 due to: Cost; Decreased quality of experience; Lack of access and positive role models; Safety and transportation issues; Social stigma. Increased support is imperative in encouraging girls to play. Looking to role models, such as female athletes, can help demonstrate to girls that success in sports is attainable, and can provide them with the confidence and determination needed as they seek to overcome life’s hurdles. Through SRGC, I want to empower Malaysian women and girls to pursue any sport of their choice and eliminate their worry of self-image in moulding the next generation of strong women. Collectively, we all can play a role to not just dialogue, but motivate collaborative action, mobilise resources and the political will to inspire change for equality, advocate for the promotion, protection and support of women and girls in sport, and applaud the important contributions they make in Malaysia. #WomenInSportAcademy
